WHOIS is a protocol which makes it an easy task to view the details a given domain has been registered with through a command line or with the help of special web-based lookup websites. This information includes the names, address and e-mail address of the owner, admin, technical and billing persons along with the registrar organization the domain has been obtained through, the creation and expiration dates. Except for a few country-code TLDs that have certain limitations, the WHOIS information of any Internet domain can be changed freely whenever you want, which is quite important given that based on the policies of the top-level Internet Corporation, ICANN, all details must be current and legitimate always. Failure to comply with these policies may result in losing the ownership of a domain name and in some cases a domain name may even be removed from the Domain Name System and released for free registration.
